Bananas are said to reduce the risks of: * Depression -- because bananas contain trypotophan, a protein converted to serotonin that is associated with calm and relaxation. * PMS -- because they have plenty of vitamin B6, which assists in the regulation of blood glucose levels that affect mood. * Anemia -- because they are high in iron, which stimulates the production of blood hemoglobin. * High blood pressure (and stroke) - because of their high potassium, low salt content. * Stupidity. Seriously, bananas are said to boost brain-power because the high potassium levels are associated with alertness. * Constipation -- thanks to all the fiber. * The list goes on and on (ulcers, SAD, warts, for examples) but you get the idea -- this fruit has a cult following. Maybe some of the banana hype is due to a kind of "chopsticks effect." This is a phrase first applied to studies about manual dexterity. Investigators initially found chopstick users had more of it. However, further reflection suggested that a variant can appear for other reasons, in the chopsticks case simply because these utensils are more prevalent in Asian populations. * So with the banana -- there may be other factors at play in the favorable effects noted with banana consumption.
